Lighting is one of the most transformative elements in interior design — yet it's often the last thing people think about. Planning your lighting properly from the start (or during a renovation) makes a huge difference to how a room looks and feels.
The Three Layers of Lighting
Good lighting design uses three layers:
Ambient lighting — the general background lighting for the room. Typically ceiling-mounted: downlights, pendants or surface-mounted fixtures.
Task lighting — focused light for specific activities: under-cabinet kitchen lighting, desk lamps, bedside reading lights.
Accent lighting — decorative or mood lighting: LED strip lighting, picture lights, wall lights.
A room with only ambient lighting tends to feel flat and harsh. Combining all three layers creates depth, interest and flexibility.
Room-by-Room Guide
Living Room
The living room needs flexibility — bright for daytime use, dimmer for films and evenings. Consider:
- Dimmable downlights (or a central pendant) for ambient light
- Wall lights or lamps for atmosphere
- Feature lighting for a fireplace, artwork or shelving
- A separate circuit for the TV area
Kitchen
Kitchens need excellent task lighting above worktops, combined with pleasant ambient lighting:
- LED downlights for ambient light (consider warm white 2700–3000K)
- Under-cabinet LED strip lighting directly above the worktop
- A pendant or feature light over an island or dining area
Bedroom
Bedrooms benefit from soft, warm ambient light and functional task lighting:
- Dimmable ceiling light or pendant
- Bedside wall lights or table lamp circuits
- Wardrobe lighting if you have fitted wardrobes
Bathroom
Bathrooms need bright, clear light for grooming, with compliant fittings in zones:
- Downlights above the main area (IP44 minimum)
- A mirror light or illuminated mirror for face-level task light
- Warm white colour temperature (3000K) is generally most flattering
Colour Temperature Explained
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K):
- 2700K — warm white, similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. Cosy, residential feel.
- 3000K — warm white, slightly crisper. Good for kitchens and bathrooms.
- 4000K — cool white, clean and clinical. More commercial; rarely ideal in a home.
For residential use, 2700–3000K is the standard recommendation.
Planning Your Lighting Before the Electrician Arrives
Sketch out where you want fittings positioned before first fix. Changing your mind after plastering is expensive. Consider furniture layouts — the position of sofas, beds and dining tables should inform where you want light focused.
