Choosing the right electrician is important — poor electrical work can be dangerous and expensive to put right. Here's what to look for when hiring a domestic electrician in Greater Manchester.
Check They Are Registered With a Competent Person Scheme
The most important check. In England and Wales, any electrical work in a home that falls under Part P of the Building Regulations must be carried out by a registered competent person, or notified to Building Control. The main schemes are:
- NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting)
- NAPIT
- ELECSA
Being registered with one of these schemes means the electrician's work is independently assessed and that they can self-certify notifiable work. You can verify registration on each scheme's website. At Onyx Electrical Solutions, we are NICEIC approved — you can check our registration online.
Ask About Qualifications
Qualified electricians in the UK typically hold:
- City & Guilds 2360 or 2357 (older qualification) — the traditional domestic electrical installation qualification
- City & Guilds 2391 or 2394/2395 — inspection and testing qualifications (required for EICRs)
- 18th Edition (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022) — current wiring regulations knowledge
Don't be afraid to ask to see certificates. A professional will be happy to show them.
Get At Least Two or Three Quotes
Prices can vary significantly. Very cheap quotes may indicate shortcuts — always ask what is included. A good quote should specify exactly what work is to be done, what accessories will be used, and whether certification is included.
Ask Whether They Will Certify the Work
Any notifiable electrical work — consumer units, new circuits, work in kitchens and bathrooms — must be certified. An electrician who says certification isn't necessary for your job (when it is) or who doesn't mention it may not be properly registered.
Check Reviews
Google reviews, Checkatrade and Trustpilot are good sources of honest feedback. Look for recent reviews and pay attention to how the company responds to any negative ones.
Watch for Red Flags
- No fixed business address
- Unwilling to provide a written quote
